I am honoured to address you today at the Cairo Water Week, one of the biggest water-related gathering not only in Egypt, but in the Mediterranean as well as in Africa.

Thank you very much for having me here at the health ministry in Cairo, still at a time when COVID-19 is on everyone’s mind.

Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, is travelling to Egypt this weekend to participate at the Cairo Water Week (CWW2021) and hold a number of bilateral discussions with Egyptian and regional representatives.

I am happy to be here to be able to present to you the 2021 enlargement package that we have just adopted at the College meeting this afternoon.

Thank you, thank you very much. I am very glad that I can present to you as well now the enlargement package of this year.

The European Commission has published a report on the delivery of the pledges made at the fifth Brussels conference on “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region”, held on 30 March 2021.

The European Union has disbursed an essential payment of €92 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Today is a very important day. Our leaders will not only confirm but also make it very clear that we are committed to the full integration and membership of the Western Balkan within the European Union.

The EU-Western Balkans summit took place in Brdo pri Kranju, Slovenia, on 6 October 2021. EU leaders agreed on the Brdo declaration, with which the Western Balkans partners have aligned themselves.

First of all, let me also congratulate Prime Minister Janša for this successful Summit. And thank you very much for the outstanding organisation and hospitality we have had here.

On 06 October, EU and Western Balkans leaders will hold a Summit in Brdo pri Kranju, hosted by the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and chaired by President of the European Council Charles Michel.

Ahead of the EU-Western Balkans Summit on 6 October, President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will be in the Western Balkans between Tuesday and Thursday, to visit Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

On Monday 27 September, High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell will address the second edition of the EU – Western Balkans Media Literacy conference, which will focus on “building resilience to disinformation”.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in early 2020, the EU, EU Member States and European financial institutions, as Team Europe, have disbursed €34 billion in support to partner countries in addressing the pandemic and its consequences, delivering on its promises with concrete results.

The European Commission welcomes the adoption on 15 September by the European Parliament of the new Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance (IPA III) for the period 2021-2027...
